Lake Hamilton Habitat
Restoration Project

Get Hooked on Helping Lake Hamilton!

The Lake Hamilton Habitat Project was started by professional fisherman, Ricky Green and supported by Capt Darryl Morris and friends. Ricky lives on Lake Hamilton and you'll find none other who loves this lake and Hot Springs more. Ricky has fished all over the world his whole life and knows firsthand the benefits of having an abundant fishery.

The project is an effort to restore and "grow" the lake's fishery. All the natural habitat and cover is long gone. Without proper habitat and cover the fish population will dwindle. That is why it is so important that we add man-made habitat to the lake in as much of an organic, responsible way as possible.

Please notice, we are not calling them "fish attractors." Though a properly built habitat will attract fish, it benefits the lake's bass, crappie, bream and baitfish much more. It will support the entire cycle of life. The density of these habitats provide ample protection for fish's fry and small baitfish. Algae grows on this providing food for the fry and baitfish. Reducing the mortality rate and increasing recruitment of the fry and baitfish which in turn increase the number of catchable bass, crappie and bream.

This project is not a "guess it might work" deal. It is tried and proven. Darryl was one of the key players that started and conducted just such a project on Lake Greeson. Supported by the AGFC Southwest Region, that lake is now teaming with bass and crappie. Greater numbers of fish are being caught and the healthy size of both bass and crappie have more than doubled. Soon, this project will grow into a habitat maintenance program and preserve our fishing tradition for generations to come.

We can do the same thing for Lake Hamilton. But we need your help. Material and labor costs are easily managed with your donation. And, for every dollar raised for this restoration project we can apply for federal funds at a 3 to 1 ratio.

Let me explain two ways your donation will add habitat back in Lake Hamilton

There are two types of bamboo structures being made. We call the first tall one a "Condo" and the second shorter one a "Casa." Your donation pays for the labor and material cost. In order to truly benefit Lake Hamilton over 1,000 will need to be sunk and maintained. Each will be placed strategically to best benefit the fish during all seasons for protection and food. Any amount of donation large or small helps. Here are some pictures of our ongoing work:

Another and more enduring way we add habitat to Lake Hamilton utilizes a manmade, environmentally friendly fish attractor. This attractor can be added to our many boat docks as is or bamboo can be added to it for more dense cover. The versatility of this structure works great for deep and shallow water. For a $150.00 donation, we will assemble and properly weight this rack for you on your dock (upon request) or sink it in our lake for future generations to enjoy catching fish. Here's some pictures:

Not only will this project benefit the fish and the anglers who love to catch them, but it will also strengthen and support the economy of Hot Springs. The better the fishing is on Lake Hamilton the more use will be made of local hotels and resorts, restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, etc. You get the picture.

Hot Springs is a hot little town for many reasons and we are asking for your support in this venture to make Lake Hamilton one of the world's best fishing destinations.
